In the 88th minute, with the score already 5-1, Raphinha collected the ball on the left flank with enough room to shoot for a third time. He shielded it, pushed it wide and waited for support. A player with two goals behind him has every right to shoot from there. He kept the ball, and he kept the rhythm of the game.

Seconds later, on the opposite wing, Lamine Yamal received the ball and was fouled. Raphinha was the first to reach him. He spoke quickly, tapped the teenager on the back and returned to his position. At full time he did not head straight for the tunnel. He waited for Yamal.

In the press conference, the first question concerned the 2026 Ballon d'Or shortlist. Raphinha's name was not on it. In seven years of watching European football from Seoul, I have learned one thing: the statements made after a win are rarely as revealing as the way a player walks into the tunnel.

From the outside, the reading is different. Many assume Raphinha stayed silent about the Ballon d'Or because he did not want to voice his disappointment. That may be partly true. Stopping there, though, misses something larger: Barcelona's confidence is currently running through one player's feet. A team that draws its inspiration from the output of its number 11 has a thin structure.

One match is one data point. A 5-1 win on the opening matchday says little about the four months ahead. The thing worth watching lies elsewhere: when Raphinha rests, how does Barcelona attack, and when Yamal is tightly marked, who opens the space.
